Frequently asked questions
How does IRCC count the days?
You need 1,095 days of physical presence in the 5 years before signing your application, including at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Each day as a temporary resident or protected person counts as 0.5 day, up to 365 days.
Does time outside Canada count?
No. Every day outside the country reduces physical presence, even if you keep a Canadian job or tax residency. That is why this calculator lets you subtract absences.
Is physical presence enough?
No. You also need valid PR status, taxes filed in at least 3 of the 5 years (if required), language proof (ages 18 to 54), the citizenship test and no prohibition.
